American Association of Woodturners Symposium

Attended the AAW Symposium in Tampa Florida. Arrived at 11.30 am Thursday not really knowing what to expect. It soon was obvious that this was a major logistical nightmare to bring together, especially if items don’t arrive as planned. Friday the first day was surreal, there were people everywhere before the demonstrations and when they started it was like a ghost town. The trade area had every conceivable tool, jig, book, dvd, timber, T-shirts, lathe and any other woodturning related item…woody heaven.
A new addition this year was Riley Gallery presenting a wonderful display of prominent artists work, many of which I would have enjoyed displaying in my own collection.
Once I digested all this I was confronted by the Instant Gallery..7 tables nearly as long as the huge hall filled with what I could only describe as an outstanding diverse range of carving, colouring, multi axis turning, deep hollowing, segmented turning, embellishment on turned items. The standard was exemplary. So much to see that I viewed half on Friday and the rest on Saturday, to absorb it all.
All the demonstrations I attended where of an excellent standard, plenty of information for the beginner and the accomplished wood turner alike. A diverse range of very skilled people.
A wonderful three and a half days catching up with friends and making new ones.

  1. As long as you still have money, the good times continue to roll at the AAW symposiums. My third AAW, if you are still in country in late August and can make it down to Waco, Tx. there will be another symposium called SWAT. South West Area Turners, I’ve been told it is the second biggest, don’t know if that is true or not.

  2. It was so good to see you again. I was glad to see your demo as well. It was a very good job. Keep up the good work.
